Local Girl Scouts Help Decorate the White House!
The White House contacted GSUSA to request girls to design 600 ribbons to be used in their holiday decorations. Girls would receive a blue ribbon that was to be decorated with either the words Rejoice, Renew or Reflect in a variety of languages. GSUSA selected GSHS as one of three council to participate in this project!
GSHS troops serving nearly 600 girls responded that they wanted to be part of this project! Our goal was to get as many girls across our council involved, so we divided up the ribbons and most girls will work in teams to decorate them.

Mush, Mush in Minnesota: Dogsledding!
Charlotte will journey in the tradition of the great polar treks -- on cross-country skis, supported by a sled and a team of enthusiastic huskies. She'll explore the Superior National Forest, a land of unique beauty and intense silence, learn to ski expedition-style with a backpack, mush a dog sled over varying terrain, and camp comfortably. Charlotte will also gain a new understanding of how to stay warm utilizing clothing, activity, and food.
Girl Scout "mushers" will join in all aspects of dog handling, including setting out lines, feeding and watering, harnessing, and packing the sled. At the end of each exhilarating day, you’ll enjoy good trail cooking and sharing stories with your new friends from across the country, and you'll marvel at crisp starry skies and the glow of the Northern Lights.
Her adventure will start in Duluth, Minnesota on Monday, December 28.

When the Truth Hurts: Helping Daughters Be Honest in a Good Girl World
By Rachel Simmons | November 18th, 2009 |
I had just started a fifth grade class when a student began waving her hand and doing that “Oooh! Oooh! Oooh!” thing that I used to do when I couldn’t contain myself.*
“Okay,” she said, “what if, like, my friend asks me if I like the dress she was buying and I didn’t like it and I wanted to tell her but I was afraid she would get mad at me?”
This is the dreaded teaching moment when I want to stand up like a lounge performer, wave fondly and shout, “Thank you so much! Good night!”
But I had a whole class left to teach, and I had to deal with it. This is a question that can break your heart. It’s the moment when a girl announces her awareness of Good Girl pressure – the rules that tell girls they must be unfailingly nice to others at all costs, even at the expense of their own integrity. Girl Scout Grateful Heart Program
There are many unsung supporters in our community that deserve to be recognized. From the police officers who serve & protect, the mayor who runs the city, the teacher who goes above & beyond or the business that gives back. Show your appreciation and share with them your “grateful heart”.
Your grateful heart can be anything that lets them know you appreciate what they do for you and our community. It can be baked cookies, or a homemade card. You and your troop can make a special craft to share or create a thoughtful SWAP.
For more information on how to get involved CLICK HERE.

Sweet Inspiration: Elizabeth “Honey” Gwin’s Girl Scout Story
From Alumnae E-News from GSUSA
Elizabeth “Honey” Gwin has an unrelenting passion for Girl Scouting and devotion to girls. Honey came to Girl Scouts as a volunteer and eventually became the executive director for the Prairie Girl Scout Council, now known as Girl Scouts Heart of the South. For over forty years this phenomenal woman has inspired hundreds of girls and adult volunteers.
During her tenure Honey exceeded all expectations and grew council membership from 400 to 5,000, using innovative ideas, tenacity, and a relentless work ethic. She also recognized the need for a permanent site for a residential Girl Scout camp and spent many years cultivating relationships that would accomplish this goal. Honey was instrumental in finding and securing the land for Camp Tik-A-Witha in Van Vleet, Mississippi, in 1970; and, adept as she was at utilizing resources, she convinced the architectural department at Mississippi State University to design the camp. Moreover, when the Tombigbee State Park wanted to dispose of cabins, she was first in line with a request: that the cabins be given to Girl Scouts. Soon after the camp opened, she began work on another dream—providing a residential camp session for children with special needs.
Recently, Honey reflected on the special session, now named in her honor: “We had the 35th camp for the handicapped this year. It’s the most wonderful feeling that these children get to act like other campers—they swim, they canoe... And their parents get this whole week of freedom.”
At the age of 100, Honey continues to inspire all Girl Scouts to be the best they can be, to never give up their dreams, and to stand tall with grace whenever adversity strikes. Honey insists that it’s the girls and volunteers who deserve credit for building the council and camps; however, without strong female leaders like her, girls and volunteers wouldn’t have had such a shining example of how to persevere and lead towards a better future.
Thank you Ms. Gwin for all you have done and continue to do for girls in the Heart of the South!
