About the refreshed GS brand ...

On the cusp of our 100th anniversary, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) our national organization, has been working to answer an important question ... how does Girl Scouts remain relevant to girls today and going forward?

To answer that question, GSUSA worked long and hard on a new look and concept which would appeal to both girls who are already Girl Scouts and to those who have not yet joined.

A revitalized national brand for Girl Scouts was developed; including the new logo you see on this page. The Girl Scout logo has been refreshed, and the color green has been reclaimed.

But the refreshed GS brand is more than just a great look. Based on GSUSA’s national research on remaining relevant to girls today, a brand idea was developed, leveraging the power of a question:

“What did you do today?”

This message serves as a tool for engaging and speaking to the individual (as girls wanted it to). The new idea in the form of a question challenges girls to have another look at Girl Scouts, and to rethink (in a good way) the choices they make every day. The answer to the question is as varied as each girl; it is the power of what Girl Scouts offers to every girl, everywhere.

Girls in grades 10 - 12, join us for a day trip to middle Tennessee to discover what colleges and universities have to offer! Girls will gain first hand knowledge about all facets of the collegiate experience from college faculty and students.

Schools to visit include Vanderbilt University and Fisk University in Nashville, TN.

Cost to girls includes transportation, program materials and all meals (light breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner at Hard Rock Cafe).

Design Detectives - Day 6

Day 6 Design Detectives – This is the final installment of the Design Detectives! Day 6 was spent showing off all the cool challenges we did all week to our parents, GSHS Staff and Miss Wendy from GSUSA. The girls presented their final Re-Designs to the audience and all did an outstanding job!!!

Design Detectives - Day 5

Day 5 – Today was the last full day of Design Detectives. The girls finished working on their re-design projects to present in front of their parents, GSHS staff and Ms. Wendy Friedman, Project Research Analyst from GSUSA. The Design Detectives also created a Kicking Machine and tried their hands at Marble Madness. It was another great day at Design Detectives.

GSHS Regional Program Specialist, Marlowe Brownlow, who organized Design Detectives and who spent the week with the girls had this to say, "The week comes to a close tomorrow at the Re-Design Presentation. I know I can speak for the adults who worked with the 17 wonderful young ladies and say that we will greatly miss having these girls around everyday. Girls you hold the world in your hands and I am confident that you will make this world a better place. Thank you for joining us this week."

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, is searching for a select group of young people to serve on our Youth Advisory Board (for 2010-2011) and roll up their sleeves for a few hours a month of critical thinking, engaging conversations, good fun, new friendships, and high-profile leadership.

Design Detectives - Day 3

Day 3 Update – The Design Detectives took a trip to the Sardis Dam Field Office today and met up with Mr. Dale who is a Civil/Electrical Engineer. Mr. Dale showed us around the Dam and spillway area of Sardis Lake. We got to explore the inside of the Dam’s control room, saw the area that is used to keep the Dam from breaking apart in case of an earthquake and other really neat sites that keep the Dam in working order. Even Mr. Tim our bus driver enjoyed today’s fieldtrip. After eating lunch at Sardis Lake we got back to work and learned about open and closed circuits using lights & buzzers and made sections of a dance pad like the video game Dance, Dance, Revolution. We also had three visitors today: Raleigh and Stacey from the Memphis Service Center and Natalie from the Jackson Service Center. We are looking forward to more visitors during the final three days of Design Detectives.

Girl Scout to Testify at Congressional Hearing on Cyberbullying

In testimony to the U.S. House Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, Girl Scout Dominique Napolitano, 15, from Long Island, New York, will discuss cyberbulling from a teenager’s perspective. As part of her presentation to the subcommittee chaired by U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), Dominque will explore the challenges young people face in navigating life online and dealing with the bullying that takes place online and through social media. Awesome!

Girl Scouts of the USA is continuing to take the lead in highlighting the importance of online safety for girls, highlighting their innovative online safety campaign called LMK (Let Me Know), launched by Girl Scouts of the USA and Microsoft Windows. LMK (Let Me Know) has been previously featured at the California’s Women’s Conference in Long Beach, CA, and at the Family Online Safety Institute 3rd Annual Conference in Washington DC.

While the full scope of online threats, such as cyberbullying, are difficult to measure, we do know that nearly one in six U.S. children grades six to 10 (that’s 3.2 million students) are victims of online bullying each year, according to the National Council of Juvenile Court Judges. Bullying is not "just a phase" or behavior in which "kids will be kids." The repercussions of cyberbullying can be so grave that at least 13 U.S. states have passed or are proposing laws to make it a crime.
LMK includes an interactive Web site for parents and girls, as well as an e-newsletter for parents. The e-newsletter and parent site are designed to provide parents with guidance and also serve as a tool to help families have open and honest conversations about the dangers that lurk in cyberspace.

Design Detectives - Day 2

Today the Design Detectives spent the morning at GE Aviation in Batesville, MS. This was a first for GE Aviation and Girl Scouts Heart of the South. We toured the plant where they make parts for the engines of Boeing airplanes. After the tour we met up with 5 of the plants women engineers from various fields, one was a Chemical Engineer, one an Environmental Engineer, two were Industrial Engineers and the last was a Mechanical Engineer. The Design Detectives were able to learn about what type of schooling is required to be an engineer, how much they earn in their careers and what our new friends do at the GE plant. We spent the rest of the day working on our engineering challenges for the day.

Monday June 21st

Today at Design Detectives, girls learned about the Design Process that engineers use when they are dreaming up new items for us to use in our day to day lives.

The girls designed and made a ‘Better Paperclip’, started to build their toothpick bridges and built a table out of cardboard, newspaper and duct tape. We also took a field trip to Ace Hardware in Oxford where we got to see all the tools and building materials that some engineers use in their careers.

The Mid-South Minority Business Council Presents the "2GMBE: Developing the Next Generation of Global Entrepreneurs" on Tuesday June 29, 2010 from 1:15 PM – 2:45 PM
at the Memphis Cook Convention Center's Exhibit Hall. The exhibit hall will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Environmental Service Two for One Deal!

Participate in BOTH World Water Monitoring Day and National Public Lands Day and Get a FREE Test Kit

World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is partnering for the second year with National Public Lands Day (NPLD) to offer 100 free water test kits. To receive a free kit, sites must register with WWMD and indicate that they are affiliated with NPLD, or register with NPLD and indicate that they are affiliated with WWMD (registration is free through both programs).

Participation in the WWMD program can help Girl Scouts earn credit toward the "Get With the Land" or "Water Drop" patches. Kits will be shipped between now and September as long as supplies last. Please contact wwmd@wef.org with questions.

About WWMD:
In 2006, the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) developed a partnership with World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD). Through the WWMD program, Girl Scouts learn about the quality of their local waters by testing for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature and turbidity (or clarity). These parameters represent basic elements that help determine water quality. Girl Scouts then submit their data into the worldwide database, where it is included in the annual WWMD report produced at the end of monitoring activities performed each year. In 2009, Girl Scouts participated from 32 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Records show that 248 sites were monitored and nearly 2,200 Girl Scout

Polar Bear International (PBI) has extended the deadline for teens in our area to register for Project Polar Bear's Summer Session. The deadline for teens between the ages of 14 and 18 to register for Project Polar Bear is now June 15, 2010. This program is a great way for teens to spend the hot summer working to keep the arctic cold for polar bears.

Muster up a team of two or three teens (ages 14 to 18), plus an adult advisor to guide you (not to do your project for you!)
Choose a theme and create your project (follow the link for ideas and inspiration)
Register with a participating Arctic Ambassador Center zoo near you—or sign up in the "at large" category

Memorial Weekend National Cemetery Event

An estimated 2,500 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venturers and Girl Scouts will gather Saturday morning, May 29, 2010 at the National cemetery to honor those who served their country. The Scouts will place American Flags on 46,890 graves.

The event which has reached it 26th year originated in Memphis and has now become a nation-wide tradition for the Boy Scouts. More than 75 cemeteries across the country will hold events modeled after the one here.

Registration will begin at 7:00 am with the assembly of Scouts taking place at 8:40 am. The overall program begins at 9:00 am. At this time the Scouts will place small American flags on each of the cemetery's 46,890 graves. Scouts will be assigned specific areas of the cemetery and the entire process should take only about 30 minutes.

The National Cemetery is located at 3568 Townes, off Jackson Avenue in North Memphis. Patches will be available on a first come, first served basis, and are $1.00 each. Get there early to show your support and appreciation for those men and women who have served our nation.

This is a great opportunity for your troop to come out and show your support of our armed forces during the Memorial Day weekend.

Defending Dignity, Fighting Poverty

This week, thanks to Girl Scouts of the USA, my fellow Young Woman of Distinction Vivian and I were privileged to attend the international CARE Conference on Global Poverty and Women's Issues in Washington D.C.

CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. It places special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

The Keynote speaker at the conference was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who encouraged conference participants to lobby Congress to authorize funding to campaign against child marriage, maternal death and hunger in developing nations. Mrs. Clinton took time to promote the administration's goals for eliminating poverty and disease through nutrition.

Other speakers and guests included the First Ladies of Sierra Leone, Kenya and Mozambique, who shared how they and their husbands are starting schools for girls, initiating village-level micro-financing projects and working to provide more effective pre and post natal care to rural and impoverished women. Christie Turlington and Maria Bello were also present, and awarded special recognition awards to women who are playing fundamental roles in reaching other women with solutions.

We learned that more than a billion people live in poverty. One in three children in the world live in an undernourished state. We also learned that there is hope. As we focus on women, and encourage them to join in initiatives directed at them, we will continue to see progress.
Girl Scouts was invited to share how youth are contributing and Vivian and I led a roundtable group where we were able to discuss how our Gold Award projects were birthed and what the results of our projects have been.

It was a wonderful time of sharing and getting to meet other female activists. I left feeling educated, informed and empowered to continue making a difference.

MAY 21: MEMPHIS IN MAY TRIATHLON - Money raising opportunity!
Volunteer are needed to help host over 2000 athletes for The Memphis in May Triathlon Weekend on Friday, May 21st, Saturday May 22nd, and Sunday May 23rd. All volunteers will receive a t-shirt, BBQ, and drinks while enjoying live music and a great festival atmosphere.

We need help in the following areas:

Friday 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Registration/ Packet pick-up
Saturday 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Registration/ Packet pick-up
Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Sprint Triathlon (8am start)

Groups who would like to volunteer will have donated to them $150.00 for each 10 people that they can bring to the race i.e. youth groups, ball teams, etc. Community volunteer hours are also encouraged for youth and adult groups to consider.

Oldest Living Girl Scout Turning 110

Boston's Fox 25 reports that this week, Milly England - The oldest living Girl Scout - is turning 110 years old. On Saturday friends, family and fellow Girl Scouts threw a big bash where she was honored as the oldest living Girl Scout. She recalled some of her Scouting memories from as far back as 1914 - almost as old as the organization itself!

Brownies Bake For Haiti's Sake

Let's turn our attention to a group of Brownies in Omaha, NE, who prove that Creighton University donors come in all ages - They were even personally thanked by University President Rev. John P. Schlegel after donating to the University’s Haiti Relief Effort. The Brownies of Troop 3495, Omaha, raised $645 through a bake sale and made a donation following the January 12 earthquake that devastated the county of Haiti. Brownie leader Lisa Schartz Keane, a 1991 graduate of Creighton’s School of Law, sums everything up nicely:

“The fact that 8-year-olds helped someone in need is such a powerful lesson for all of us. That they took this project and ran with it demonstrates that there is good in the world and it is reflected in these young hearts”

So far, five Creighton-led health care teams have traveled to the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC) in the Dominican Republic and were able to provide care for earthquake victims in Jimani just 30 minutes from Haiti’s capital. The quickness of the University’s response stems in part from its long-term relationship with ILAC. The University has supported health sciences students and faculty to provide health care at ILAC for more than 20 years.

Girl Scouts of the USA dedicated the Elliott Native Plant Garden at the Edith Macy Conference Center today in honor of Herford N. and Priscilla Elliott and their family’s longtime efforts to help develop girl leaders who value and protect wildlife and the environment.

The Elliott family, through the Herford N. Elliott Trust Fund, has supported GSUSA’s Elliott Wildlife Values Project since 1977. The dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by GSUSA and Girl Scout council staff members, as well as former Elliott Wildlife Values Project managers.

“We are so grateful to the Elliott family for their support of Girl Scouts,”said Florence Corsello, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration at GSUSA.

“The outdoors and respecting and appreciating nature are an essential part of the Girl Scout experience, and it’s more than fitting that we would honor the Elliotts and their longtime commitment to Girl Scouting with a beautiful garden and a beautiful setting like the Edith Macy Conference Center.”

The mission of the Elliott Wildlife Values Project is to develop girls as leaders of both wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship efforts, who positively impact their communities and the world. The project fosters the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girls develop science, outdoor, and leadership skills through girl-led, cooperative activities, in which they learn by doing. In the process, they
discover a strong sense of self, develop positive values, and gain an understanding of their important role in caring for wildlife and for our earth’s natural resources; connect with nature, the outdoors, and their local and global communities; liaise with environmental experts; and investigate career opportunities; and Take action to identify community and environmental needs, positively impact the environment, and educate and inspire others to act as stewards of the earth and its wildlife.

The project supports local Girl Scout councils, committees, and volunteers globally through program development, membership and volunteer development, learning opportunities and consultative services, grants to councils, and collaboration with organizations and agencies.

“Millions of girls have benefited from the work of the Elliott Wildlife Values Project,” said Jodi Schwarzer, Project Manager, Elliott Wildlife Values Project at GSUSA.
“The Elliott family’s support has been instrumental in building our national environmental and outdoor programming.”

The garden, which is located near the Great Hall in an area of the conference center known as Sleepy Hollow, features a variety of native plants and places where visitors can view local wildlife and engage in quiet reflection. The garden was funded by a grant from Bank of New York Mellon.

Operation Thin Mint Takes Flight From San Diego

Head over to NBC San Diego and check out some awesome photos of Girl Scout Cookies being lifted into the sky via helicopter - to be delivered around the world to American Troops serving abroad! Approximately 147,000 boxes of cookies are on their way to service men and women stationed in Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, and Korea and on board Navy ships in the Persian Gulf, Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is a project called Operation Thin Mint, which was started by the Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council nine years ago.

In order to reach all girls, one of our main goals at Girl Scouts of the USA is to bring Girl Scouting to new audiences, and lately, we have been reaching out to the Hispanic population. By getting our message out in Spanish, we hope to open doors to more girls, volunteers, donors and community partners who ordinarily might not know what Girl Scouting is all about. At the forefront of these efforts is Amelia De Dios Romero - De Dios Romero is GSUSA’s Marketing Senior Brand Manager, and is the recent recipient of leading Spanish-language newspaper El Diario La Prensa's Women of Distinction Award. She won the prestigious award for her commitment in helping deliver the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience to Hispanic girls and women throughout the country. Past honorees of La Prensa awards included New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortez-Vazquez; former U.S. Surgeon General Antonia Novello; and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the US Sonia Sotomayor. Pretty impressive company to be in! Congratulations to Amelia De Dios Romero...

In other Hispanic Initiative news, on Saturday, April 24, Girl Scouts were featured on the Sabado Gigante show, transmitted through Univision. The highly recognized host of “Sabado Gigante,” Don Francisco not only gave a shout out to Girl Scouts, he spoke about our mission. Girl Scout volunteers and girls from our Tropical and Southeast Florida councils also participated in the show as part of the audience. Fun! During the month of May, Sabado Gigante will feature a segment on Citrus Council’s “Robo Chicas Las Latinas” to showcase their many successes in robotic competitions as part of our STEM program. Also, Univision is currently running our online banners on their Web sites - this is just the start of many great things to come from our collaboration with Univision.

Some common misconceptions may lull the parents of bullies into failing to recognize warning signs.

Bullies are often star athletes or popular girls considered charismatic leaders by peers and adults, experts say. What's often missed or passed over as minor is a consistent pattern of control and aggression against other kids — behavior that socially savvy bullies can sometimes slide under the radar of grown-ups.

"It's not what we typically think of. It's not always the kid who's pushing kids down on the playground," says Rosalind Wiseman, who wrote "Queen Bees and Wannabes," the basis for the movie "Mean Girls."

This event will be held at Booneville’s City Park on April 17th, 2010, between the hours of 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. We have reserved Kid’s Town, the Big Pavilion, the Community Center and Basketball court. We will have food, games, activities and entertainment. There will be several quest speakers, positive role models, and fun for all. When our picnic is over we will be releasing helium filled balloons in the air as a reminder to ourselves and our community, that each and every one of us can make a difference in the life of a child.

Girl Scouts Heart of the South is partnering with radio personalities Drake & Zeke from WXMX 98.1 "The Max" and Shelby Farms Park Conservancy for the 2010 Field of Greens-an organic community garden at Shelby Farms Park.

The Field of Greens Opening Celebration is next Saturday from 9am-11am at the Shelby Farms Park Ops Center (6489 Mullins Station Road). Girl Scouts will be planting the crops that we will grow and cultivate over the summer. The cameras will be there and this is a great opportunity for us to show the public what we do best... TAKE ACTION!

Make sure you and your girls make plans to attend and wear your Girl Scout gear! Girls can come with troops or their families (and bring friends!). No need to rsvp for this event and best of all, it's FREE.

The Memphis Medical Society Endorses Girl Scouts

In our current world, our children find themselves with iPods, cell phones, computer games, easy transportation and an abundance of food. With all of the high tech, rich and plentiful food, and lack of exercise, the children in the United States frequently find themselves in front of video screens and out of shape. As obesity in youth becomes an epidemic, these children are at greater risk of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and orthopedic injuries. The programs of the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scout of the USA strive to get our children off the couch or away from a video monitor; into the world we live in and into nature, while having a good time. The boys and girls learn some of the skills needed to be successful in life. They incorporate the moral values of these programs into their lives to become more successful and patriotic citizens.

We, the Board of Directors of The Memphis Medical Society feel that both the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA benefit our children with the programs they provide for living a healthy lifestyle, as well as the life skills and the values they instill. We would recommend participation in these organizations for all children.

JUNE 23: LUNCHEON WITH WOMEN HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
On Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, Memphis Public Library and information Center will host a luncheon at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library to connect women health professionals with young women who are: in grades 8 through 12, are good students and have a keen interest in pursuing a career in health sciences.

At the luncheon, participants can look forward to communicating with professionals who will share the rewards and challenges of their career and what students should do to prepare for post college studies. They also will share the qualities that make a competent and compassionate healthcare professional and answer questions the young women pose to them. In addition, a complimentary boxed lunch will be served and the participants will be invited to tour Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians, a special exhibit at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library June 1 - July 10.

If your service unit or group has a specific training need, submit an Adult Learning Opportunity Request form to your local service center to let us know. A few things to keep in mind:

There is a 10-person minimum for requests. If you are having trouble meeting this minimum, don’t forget to check with your membership manager or neighboring service units to see if there is a similar need.

The ability to fulfill the request depends on the availability of a facilitator

Requests must be received at least 6 weeks in advance of the training need.

Submit the Adult Learning Opportunity Request Form to set up a convenient date and time that works with your hectic schedule!

MARCH 26-28: FINE CRAFTS FAIR
Memphis Association of Craft Artists and Christian Brothers University have once again come together to produce their spring Fine Crafts Fair. The show and sale will be held March 26 – 28, 2010, in the Canale Arena on the CBU campus. On display will be fine craft in a wide range of mediums, including pottery, glass, wood, and much more. Girl Scout volunteer Pat Moody will have artwork on display.

A wine and cheese reception will be held on Friday, March 26, from 5:00 pm—9:00 pm. The market will be open and all artists will be in attendance. The hours for the show will be 10:00 am—6:00 pm on Saturday, March 27 and 11:00 am—5:00 pm on Sunday, March 28. Parking will be available in the Central Avenue lot. This event will be held at Booneville’s City Park on April 17th, 2010, between the hours of 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. We have reserved Kid’s Town, the Big Pavilion, the Community Center and Basketball court. We will have food, games, activities and entertainment. There will be several quest speakers, positive role models, and fun for all. When our picnic is over we will be releasing helium filled balloons in the air as a reminder to ourselves and our community, that each and every one of us can make a difference in the life of a child.

On Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, Memphis Public Library and information Center will host a luncheon at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library to connect women health professionals with young women who are: in grades 8 through 12, are good students and have a keen interest in pursuing a career in health sciences.

At the luncheon, participants can look forward to communicating with professionals who will share the rewards and challenges of their career and what students should do to prepare for post college studies. They also will share the qualities that make a competent and compassionate healthcare professional and answer questions the young women pose to them. In addition, a complimentary boxed lunch will be served and the participants will be invited to tour Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians, a special exhibit at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library June 1 - July 10.

MARCH 20: FAMILY FARM FEST
In celebration of National Agriculture Day, Our Family Farm, LLC is hosting a FAMILY FARM FEST. The theme for National Ag Day is "Agriculture: Abundant, Affordable, Amazing." The Fest will take place from 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Demonstrations will include a variety of horse riding/driving events, Educational sessions on gardening, irrigation, insects (with an entomologist), and firearms (with local game wardens) will be taking place throughout the fest. Exhibits will focus on the production of food and fiber crops including cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, and pecans. We also have a hay ride that showcases our farming equipment, horses, and cattle. Concessions, farm games, door prizes and souvenirs will also be available.

The FAMILY FARM FEST will be held at 14281 State Line Rd., off of Center Hill Road, in DeSoto County, MS on a modern, working family farm. Admission is $5 per person (children under age 2 admitted for free), with a portion of the proceeds being donated to local chapters of Future Farmers of America.

MARCH 21: SPRING INTO GREEN WITH USGBC
North MS Branch of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) is hosting a green fair, “Spring Into Green”, at Fairpark (in front of City Hall) from 2pm-5pm. There will be live music from The Benders, a compact fluorescent light (CFL) giveaway, recycling centers, drinks, food, kids’ activities, and several vendors with “green” booths on recycling, green building materials & other sustainable alternatives. New this year, we are requesting that each Service Unit send a minimum of two representatives. Please submit names to your Membership Manager by Friday, April 2.

Mini-Grants
The Annual Meeting is a vital part of the council's operation. Because of the importance of volunteer participation, GSHS is offering two one-time mini-grant opportunities to Service Units.

A mini-grant of $250 will be awarded to the Service Unit with the highest percentage of membership attending the Annual Meeting (qualifying age is 14 years, as set forth in the Council by-laws).

An additional mini-grant of $250 will be awarded to the Service Unit with the largest number of members (qualifying age is 14 years old, as set forth in the Council by-laws)

The mini-grants must be used by the winning Service Unit to fund a local community service project and reporting back to the council will be required.

When their kids turn 12, parents are concerned about peers pressuring them to smoke cigarettes, drink and use drugs, but it turns out 12-year-olds are doing something else: getting high on inhalants.

A new national survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report finds that they're using inhalants more than marijuana, hallucinogens and cocaine combined.

Some young people are sniffing -- inhaling -- a wide variety of products to get high. Inhalants are legal, cheap and everywhere. They can easily be found in most homes: spray paint, shoe polish, glue, air fresheners, hair spray, nail polish, gasoline, aerosols, computer cleaners, even the refrigerant from air conditioners.

They flew non-combat missions, but 38 were killed in service.

WASHINGTON - A long-overlooked group of women who flew aircraft during World War II were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday. Known as Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, they were the first women to fly U.S. military planes. About 200 of these aviators, mostly in their late 80s and early 90s and some in wheelchairs, came to the Capitol to accept the medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress.

The Volunteer program is a two-session summer program that invites 15 teenagers to each session to participate in a summer experience of learning, personal growth and creative fun. The program is highly demanding, as teens work closely with patients, siblings and parents. It also allows them to explore possible career paths and develop leadership, interpersonal team building and self awareness. Tennessee Aquarium offers spring break program

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga is offering a special biology program for children during spring break.

The new Keeper Kids Program will be available free to children and their families who pay for admission to the nonprofit aquarium located on the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga.

Aquarium spokesman Thom Benson said in a statement that the program, set March 13 to 21 and April 3 to 11, will give participants an opportunity to accompany biologists and educators, including some caring for penguins, otters, butterflies and fish.

Admission is $24.95 for adults and $14.95 per child, ages 3 to 12. Proceeds help support aquarium conservation programs.

Lemon Chalet Creme Voluntary Recall

The Girl Scout cookie supplier in our area, Little Brownie Bakers, has advised that some batches of Lemon Chalet Crème cookies may have an off taste and smell but are safe to eat.

Some of those cookies have been distributed in the Memphis council region.

Only one of the lot number codes were assigned to the Memphis area. If you have Lemon Chalet Cremes with this lot number of 7459402, then we will replace them at the Memphis Service Center.

Please remember that there is a large possibility that these cookies were not effected and are still "good" cookies. LBB wanted to make sure that their quality is maintained, so they are including the entire production week's worth of lot numbers in the voluntary recall.

Please assure your customers that the cookies are safe for consumers to eat, however they are not up to LBB's quality standards.

“These lots contain oils that may be breaking down, which can result in the off taste and smell,” says Don Davis, vice president and general manager of Little Brownie Bakers.

He reports that no other Girl Scout cookie varieties are involved. Cookies affected were distributed only from the Memphis warehouse. The Girl Scout service centers in Columbus, Corinth, Grenada, Tupelo or Jackson are not believed to have received any of the affected cookies.

Troop leaders, cookie volunteers and consumers may return cookies with the above-listed lot number code to the Memphis Cupboard at the Memphis Regional Service Center at 2715 Kirby Parkway, Suite 1, Memphis, TN 38119.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, is searching for a select group of young people to serve on our Youth Advisory Board (for 2010-2011) and roll up their sleeves for a few hours a month of critical thinking, engaging conversations, good fun, new friendships, and high-profile leadership.

Sky’s the Limit is a program designed to engage girls in developing skills and interest in non-traditional careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This year the focus is on aviation. Girls will experience hands-on aerospace activities, experiments, interactive discussions and demonstrations guided by female pilots, airplane mechanics, airplane engineers, airline executives and other women involved in various aspects of aviation. These activities will expose them to aviation and other STEM related careers while building teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking skills. Girl Scouts Heart of the South and the Down town Tupelo Main Street Association are working to get kids involved in Gardening! The Tupelo Children’s Market invites children to grow their own vegetables or flowers and sell them at the Farmer’s Market. Workshops will be given to help teach kids to have fun in the dirt! These include: soil preparation, basic gardening skills, ridding your garden of pesky insects, and marketing your produce. Other workshops are in development to give the program a fun Girl Scout twist.

Three community gardens to choose from and Space at the Tupelo Girl Scout Office for container planting

Children’s Market will start in May and be every Thursday evening 5:00-8:00

Children’s Market workshops are free! If you plan to sell produce or flowers then a booth is $7.

Anti-Bullying Task Force Draws Hundreds

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Hundreds of parents met in South Hadley on Tuesday night as an anti-bullying task force mobilized weeks after a case of bullying so extreme it drove a 15-year-old girl to end her life.Phoebe Prince, a freshman at South Hadley High School, died Jan. 14., and two students accused of bullying the 15-year-old have been expelled. A police investigation could also lead to criminal charges.

"These students' lives have also been dramatically altered, and they won't be graduating from South Hadley High School," Smith said of the students who were expelled.

Prince is thought to have committed suicide after allegedly enduring abuse online and in school from female classmates who were upset that Prince, 15, a sophomore who had recently moved to the U.S. from Ireland, was dating a senior football player.

The Daisy Journey, Between Earth and Sky

Designed to help girls in Kindergarten through First grade develop a lasting love and respect for the natural world. This journey tells the story of three flower friends on a road trip through the world’s greatest landscapes. It introduces girls to many wonders of nature such as oceans, lakes, beaches, mountain, and rolling plains. By the end of the journey Daisies will see that travel is far more than just getting from one place to the other. It’s an adventure that opens their eyes to new experiences and wonders of the world.

There are 10 great sessions designed to develop the girl’s love for the natural world. They will start with Getting Ready for the Road, then off to Living the Law, In the Land of Milk and Cheese and ending with On the Road to New Adventures. Through out the sessions girls will complete activities that allow them to earn three leadership awards.

The Blue Bucket Award encourages girls to develop good relationship skills by learning to express their feeling, negotiating and compromising to resolve conflicts and for being considerate and caring to others.

The Firefly had a unique ability to give light that add glitter to summer nights. Girls are asked to recognize and develop their own unique skill and teach others in order to earn the Firefly Award.

The last award is named for the flower friend Clover, who helps preserve the natural habitat of Alaska. To earn this award girls will team up to protect a local natural treasure through caring and sharing. Project suggestions include a Minding your Weed and Seed Campaign with the local library.

This journey is filled with fun and friendship and is designed to develop the skills and values young girls need to become leaders. The activities are designed to enable Daisies to strive toward achieving 13 of the 15 national outcomes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

As on any journey, Daisies can venture off the main route to see in real life all that is Between Earth and Sky! They can plan a day trip to their local park or Memphis Zoo. The Natchez Trace Parkway also has programs available. Planning your own road trip to participate in a council wide event such as Daisy Daze or plan a mom and me weekend at one of our resident camps is also a great way to enhance this journey. Experiencing nature first hand gives the Daisies opportunities to deepen their love and respect for Everything between Earth and Sky.

Service Project Opportunity with The State of Mississippi Veterans Home at 120 Veterans Drive in Oxford, MS is looking for troops or groups who are willing to volunteer at the home.

Volunteers can assist with various recreational activities – reading to those whose eyesight is failing them, delivering mail, walking with them inside or outside, pushing their wheelchairs for a short stroll inside or outside, giving them snacks, playing checkers or cards, writing letters for them, playing or singing music for them or just simply conversing with them.

Experience Scouting like never before with Adventure Base 100! Created specifically for the 100th Anniversary Celebration, Adventure Base 100 is traveling the country to give people an exciting, hands-on view of the history and future of the Boy Scouts of America.

This 10,000 square foot campus features immersive Scouting experiences including a ropes course and zip line, interactive digital exhibits, a multi-sensory IMAX-like dome, and more! It will also house a traveling museum that will showcase real artifacts from the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Tex.

Smart Girls at the Party

Amy Poehler is known as a TV comedian (Saturday Night Live, Parks & Recreation) and a movie actress (Baby Mama), but the former Girl Scout Brownie also is a Web pioneer. Hadn't heard? It's possible her Internet work flew just under your radar.

Last fall, Poehler joined up with Meredith Walker, a former senior producer for Nickelodeon's Nick News, and musician Amy Miles, host of the PBS show Lomax: The Hound of Music. Their plan: Make an Internet-only TV series that could be viewed for free by anyone at any time. The title: Smart Girls at the Party. The subject: girls!

In each of the first season's eight episodes, Poehler interviewed girls about their passions. She sat behind a round desk in a dark room (the set looks just like that of PBS's Charlie Rose) and introduced the show as a celebration of "extraordinary individuals who are changing the world by being themselves."

Girl Scouts Heart of the South Gold Award Scholarship
The purpose of the Girl Scouts Heart of the South Scholarship is to provide financial assistance through college scholarships to help facilitate the continuation of academic growth for Girl Scout Gold Award recipients. The scholarship is awarded based on achievement in Girl Scouting, academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities. A one-time payment of $1000 will be made directly to the recipient’s college of choice by the start of their first semester.

Girl Scouts Heart of the South West Tennessee Scholarships
The purpose of the Girl Scouts Heart of the South West Tennessee Scholarship is to provide financial assistance through college scholarships to help facilitate the continuation of academic growth for West Tennessee Girl Scouts who are graduating High School Seniors that have been accepted into a college or university. The scholarship is awarded based on achievement in Girl Scouting, academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities. Equal payments will be dispersed directly to the recipient’s college of choice at the beginning of each semester of their enrollment at a college or university. The following five scholarships are available:

E. Jane Hazlewood Leadership Scholarship- $2000.00 ($250.00 per semester for up to 8 semesters)
Donna M. McHaffey Leadership Scholarship - $2000.00 ($250.00 per semester for up to 8 semesters)
William R. Taylor Leadership Scholarship - $2000.00 ($250.00 per semester for up to 8 semesters)
Susan C. Anderson Leadership Scholarship - $2000.00 ($250.00 per semester for up to 8 semesters)
Community Advisory Board Leadership Scholarship - $2000.00 ($250.00 per semester for up to 8 semesters)

Campfire Parties in My Big Backyard

The Memphis Botanic Garden is offering private Campfire Parties in their My Big Backyard Children's Garden to Girl Scouts.

Non- Profit Group Information

Non-profit groups now have the opportunity for private Campfire Parties in My Big Backyard at the Memphis Botanic Garden! Up to 150 people can be accommodated in the patio, enjoying one of our fire pits and night activities for kids.

Bring Your Own…

Groups will provide their own snacks, such as hot dogs and marshmallows, for roasting . Your group also provides plates, cups, and drinks. Garden staff will lead the activities and tend the fires and must be present for any group campfire. We will also provide chairs, two tables, fire pits, fire wood, and roasting sticks.

Autumn, Winter, or Spring…

Because of seasonal constraints, Campfire Parties cannot be scheduled in June, July, August, or September. During autumn, winter, or spring, Campfire Parties can be scheduled between the hours of 6-8 pm. One-half hour before and after the two hour party is for set-up and clean-up.

Oh, no! Rain is Coming…

In the event of inclement weather, we will be happy to reschedule your program.

The Nature Station in Land Between The Lakes is happy to announce the return of Girl Scout Day at the Nature Station, which will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10am to 3pm. All activities will be ongoing throughout the day, so you can arrive any time between 10am and 3pm. We hope to see you and your girl scouts there! The Nature Station is located in Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area in Cadiz, KY.

Girl Scout Day is a day of programs and activities devoted to Girl Scouting! Girl Scouts of all ages will be able to work toward their various badges and accomplishments. Brownies will work toward their Eco-Explorer and Animal Try-Its, Juniors on their Wildlife and Earth Connections Badges, and Seniors/Cadettes/S2B on their All About Birds and and Wildlife IPs.

Activities will include live animal programs, a scavenger hunt, using binoculars to identify birds, and more. Scouts will learn about topics such as food chains, backyard birds, animal adaptations, and more. Plus, they will enjoy viewing all of the live animals on exhibit at the Nature Station, such as a bobcat, endangered red wolves, owls, and snakes. A complete schedule of the day will be available in early March.

You do not need to pre-register. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for kids.

It’s Your Journey-Customize It!

There are all kinds of fun activities for girls to do in Girl Scouting, like earning badges, going camping, taking trips, selling cookies, enjoying traditions and aiming for their Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards. What ties all these different activities together? The Leadership Journeys, Girl Scouting’s core national program!

Research tells us that girls and their parents think it’s important for girls to have a national experience – something they have in common with all other Girl Scouts. That’s what Journeys offer. However, each girl’s Journey can be customized to fit her own interests and to take advantage of local resources. An online resource has been developed to give you a few ideas to get you started – online Journey maps for each grade level.

You will find that this page has links that lead to interactive Journey maps for each grade level that show you how to tie Girl Scout activities into journeys, descriptions of what’s inside each journey, and the awards girls can earn. The journey maps also include information about the adult guide for each grade level, Bronze, Silver and Gold award.

Once you’ve explored the journey maps, start thinking about ways you could tie activities into journeys. Share the maps with girls and get their ideas, too. Have fun! After all, it’s your journey – customize it!

Teens Susceptible to Coerced Reproduction

Experts are studying a phenomenon that brings a whole new meaning to the term 'unwanted pregnancy.'

About a decade ago, Elizabeth Miller remembers seeing a certain teenage girl at a hospital clinic for adolescents in Boston. The patient thought she might be pregnant and asked for a test. When it came out negative, Miller started asking the standard questions, inquiring as to whether her patient wanted to be pregnant (she didn't) and whether she was using contraceptives (she wasn't). So Miller explained all of the birth-control options and, as she describes it, "sent her on her merry way with a brown bag of condoms." It was, by most measures, a pretty routine appointment.

Except that, two weeks later, the same patient was back at the hospital, in the emergency room after her partner pushed her down the stairs. "That was the wake-up call where I started thinking there might be a relationship between the two situations," says Miller, now an assistant professor of pediatrics at University of California, Davis. "She was coming in for a pregnancy test, not wanting to be pregnant, and not wanting to use birth control. And now I'm wondering what's going on for her, knowing she was in a physically and sexually violent relationship. I started wondering whether I needed to be asking her about why [she isn't using birth control] at that visit."

This month, Miller published a study in the journal Contraception detailing "reproductive coercion," when the male partner pressures the other, through verbal threats, physical aggression, or birth-control sabotage, to become pregnant. According to Miller's research, about a third of women reporting partner violence experienced reproductive coercion, as did 15 percent of women who had never reported violence.

GSUSA in The Wall Street Journal

Great news! An article about reorganizations taking place in nonprofits is on the front page of February 1st edition of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and it mentions Girl Scouts.

The article, headlined “Once-Robust Charity Sector Hit with Mergers, Closings,” notes that GSUSA “is touting the efficiencies it gained after five Indiana councils merged in 2007. After the merger, the councils had enough money to hire a fund-raising department—something they couldn't afford individually. As a result, donations increased 25% by 2008. Participation in the scouts' technology workshop, hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., expanded to 44,000 girls, up from the 4,000 who were eligible for the original program. By combining administrative functions, property management and audits, the organization is saving about $1 million a year. ‘Five councils need five executive directors and five fax machines, meaning that money is not going to programs,’ says Ms. Aviv of Independent Sector.”

Haiti Awareness Project

Girl Scouts Heart of the South's AmeriCorps volunteers will be coordinating a project to collect supplies for the Haiti earthquake victims. They are tying the Haiti Awareness Project with the February 22nd "World Thinking Day".

The theme for this year’s Thinking Day is “together we can end extreme poverty and hunger,” and this project is a great lesson for girls on how they can really help those who have extreme poverty and hunger.

The items we are asking for are:

Girl Scouts Celebrates Black History Month 2010

Black History Month is an annual observance of the profound achievements of African Americans towards making the promise of equality a fact in the lives of every citizen. Throughout February, Girl Scouts joins the rest of the nation in celebrating the perseverance of the men and women who fought for the justice and equal treatment owed them as U.S. citizens.

In 1912, when our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, declared Girl Scouts "something for the girls of America and all the world," she meant it. And though extreme adversity and oppression would be the rule of law for many years to come, "something for everyone" has been at the heart of Girl Scouting from day one.

Looking back, our first troop for African American girls was formed in 1917, 47 years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, and by the 1950s, GSUSA began a national effort to desegregate all Girl Scout troops. Not long after, in 1956, Martin Luther King Jr. described Girl Scouts as "a force for desegregation."

In more recent times, GSUSA has partnered with historically black colleges and universities, companies, and organizations including Wilberforce University, Clark Atlanta University, Essence magazine, the National Urban League, the United Negro College Fund, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and 100 Black Men of America, Inc., to make Girl Scouts a part of the African American community. These partnerships have made our Movement richer with the addition of a multitude of new volunteers and scores of new Girl Scouts.

Today, close to 300,000 African American girls embrace the values and promise of Girl Scouting, enhancing the beauty and strength of our organization along the way.

Questions about registering for an event should be directed to Von McNeil at registration@girlscoutshs.org or at 1-800-727-8104.
Refer to the Council Calendar for information on when registration opens and closes, plus the minimum and maximum participants allowed for each specific event.
To register for an event, you must submit a Girl Scouts Heart of the South Event Registration form (available under the “forms” tab on the council website), along with any fees, to the council by the registration deadline.
You may email your completed event registration form to registration@girlscoutshs.org, fax it to (901) 797-2183 to the attention of Von McNeil, or bring it to your Regional Service Center (see the council website for Regional Service Center locations).

Take Action Project Available in the Memphis Area

Is your troop or service unit looking for a take action project in the Memphis area? Drake and Zeke, radio personalities from WXMX 98.1 "The Max", are looking for volunteers to be responsible for a community garden in the Shelby Farms area. This is a year-long commitment and the troop or service unit would be asked to schedule volunteers, weed, organize and harvest vegetables which will be donated to the Memphis Food Bank. Shelby Farms Park Conservancy will assist the troop or service unit in getting additional volunteers and spreading the word about the program.

Any troop interested should have an adult who knows a little something about gardening, although the plan is to bring in a professional to consult, providing the girls with a great learning opportunity! And as an added bonus, Drake and Zeke will talk frequently on the radio about the garden and those who are helping!

Rise in Teen Pregnancies Spurs Debate

WASHINGTON - The pregnancy rate among teenage girls in the United States has jumped for the first time in more than a decade, raising alarm that the long campaign to reduce motherhood among adolescents is faltering, according to a report released Tuesday.

The pregnancy rate among 15-to-19-year-olds increased 3 percent between 2005 and 2006 —the first jump since 1990, according to an analysis of the most recent data collected by the federal government and the nation's leading reproductive-health think tank.

Fundraising for Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts

The outpouring of support for the people of Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake last week has been remarkable, and Girl Scouts across the country have pitched in to help in many different ways. We know, however, that after natural disasters like these, sending funds is often the best way to help.

Given the catastrophic events in Haiti, the Executive Committee unanimously adopted, and the National Board this morning ratified, the following:

THAT the Executive Committee of Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Board of Directors, on the National Board’s behalf, adopts a special rule of order to allow girl members to engage in activities, which may include the direct solicitation of money, from January 14 through September 8, 2010, to support emergency relief for the January 12 earthquake disaster in Haiti. Monies raised shall be contributed only to organizations on the approved list of agencies (listed below); additions to the list shall be approved by the National President and CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA.

This now makes it possible for our girls to raise much needed funds for relief efforts in Haiti. Please take note that the money our girls raise can be contributed only to those agencies on the list below. Much of Haiti is in ruins and a second major earthquake struck the country on Wednesday. The loss of life and suffering has been heartbreaking. I hope that this action by the National Board will serve as yet another opportunity for all of us as a Movement to do what we can to help the people of Haiti in their time of need.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) has issued a list of organizations that are accepting donations for relief efforts. I have included the list below. WAGGGS is also reminding all Girl Scouts that the theme of World Thinking Day this year is “ending extreme poverty and hunger.” The tragic events in Haiti can clearly serve as a way to educate our girls about the issues of extreme poverty and hunger throughout the world.

It is at times like these that Girl Scouts throughout the world come together in sisterhood and to take action to help those in need. We have seen our Movement rally in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters over the years, and I know that all of us in Girl Scouting will do everything we can to help Haiti and its people in the weeks and months ahead.
